Who didn’t love the film Annie?

Adapted from a Broadway musical, the original film was definitely a Christmas viewing staple in my house when I was growing up and that looks set to happen again with this remake.

Produced by JayZ and Will Smith, starring the exceptionally talented Jamie Foxx and of course Quvenzhané Wallis (you know the one that was nominated for an Oscar aged just 9 years old!!), check out the trailer below:

Side note: Can you believe Quvenzhané Wallis is still only 10?

What do you think? Didn’t you just love the original? Isn’t Jamie Foxx a fine speci…*coughs* I digress… Your thoughts (on the film or even Jamie) below please 😉

This, this and more of this!!
Inspiration literally personified.

The 7th annual Essence Magazine Black Women in Hollywood luncheon took place just over a week ago on Thursday 27th February at the Beverly Hills hotel in L.A.

I love that Essence Magazine created a platform / event such as this to celebrate black women’s achievements in the entertainment industry. Just watching the coverage on-line (the event is not televised) and also watching the speeches of the award winners of the day I feel supremely inspired and motivated as well as proud of my fellow black women and all they do and continue to do in their respective industries.

I know that some people still question why or whether we need colour specific platforms like this one when we are all apparently supposed to be “post-racial” and at a time when black people/women are apparently no longer being ignored by the merit-ascribing-ocracy; a case in point might be said to be the fact that Lupita Nyong’o was awarded the Best Breakthrough Performance Award for her role as Patsey in Steve McQueen’s 12 years a Slave at the Essence Luncheon; her performance in that film then won her the Best Supporting Actress Oscar at the Academy Awards less than a week later. First Look At Angela Bassett & Mary J. Blige As Betty Shabazz & Coretta Scott King In ‘Betty & Coretta’ | Shadow and Act.

Scene from Betty and Coretta [Angela Bassett as Coretta Scott King and Mary J Blige as Betty Shabazz]

I’m already praying I wont have to wait too long to catch this here in the UK. Mary J Blige is one of my top female singers (self-confessed ‘Stan’ alert) and Angela Bassett is easily one of my top actors.

The subject of the film already captures my interest as much of what I know about the wives of Dr King and Malcolm X is contextualised as them as wives to these great public figures and civil rights activists; presuming this double biopic is aiming to be factually accurate I’m looking forward to finding out a bit about the women in the context of them as women, as Betty and Coretta.

Its due to be aired on 2nd February in the US so come the 3rd I’ll be looking out for any links posted on-line…*heavy hint* Well as Malcolm said, “By any means necessary” right?
